I just finished watching Star Wars: Rogue One, it was quite an epic and awesome movie. But after watching the movie, I could not quite pull my mind off the “Death Star.”

In the fictional Star Wars Movies (for the 1% who have not watched Star Wars), the Death Star is a powerful weapon that can destroy an entire planet in a matter of seconds.

In fact it is at the epicenter of all things Star Wars. Without the Death Star there will be no Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo or anything Star Wars and that includes the Light Sabers. Because preventing the Death Star form blowing up planets is what Star Wars is all about.

But the crazy thing about the Death Star is that it is not Science Fiction anymore … it’s already reality …

A recently declassified 1945 document shared by nuclear historian Alex Wellerstein stated that it would require only 10 to 100 Nuclear “bombs” detonated simultaneously to wipe out the human race.

But today planet Earth has not “ten” nor “a hundred” nor “a thousand” but has 15,350 nuclear war heads (no typo)! We basically have enough nuclear weapons to effectively destroy 153 planet Earths and a small Mar’s bar planet!

And the satellite technology already exists to launch a piece of hardware or missile from outer space to a specific longitude and latitude with frighteningly high accuracy/precision. Just ask google maps.

All we need to create a Death Star today is to strap (if it already has not been done) a Nuclear War Head to a Satellite and boom we have a DIY Death Star!

But back to “Rogue One”

The movie will probably smash box office records see here and here across the entire galaxy. Millions of viewers watching the movie would probably laugh … its funny, some will cry … its ending is emotional. But what people need to do more than ever is to think. Think about the Death Star not as a Science Fiction contraption from the mind of George Lucas, but as real reality.

Because the reality is that imperial forces Russia and America already have the blue print and capacity to create a Death Star … but we like the rebels in Rogue One have to fight hard to ensure that is not Earths reality.

May the force be with us all.
