Good To Great: Why Some People Make The Leap And Others Don’t
When I picked up the book Good To Great by Jim COLLINS, I was looking for a book that would help guide my start-up okadabooks.com.
But as I read the book more and more I realized that it’s strategies are not just for businesses, but for individuals as well.
I come across chapters that talked about how GREAT companies focused on an absolute standard of excellence rather than distracting themselves with what the competition is doing. In other words they were not concerned with what others where doing as noted from the book excerpt below:
“Those who built the good-to-great companies weren’t motivated by fear. They weren’t driven by fear of what they didn’t understand. They weren’t driven by fear of looking like a chump. They weren’t driven by fear of watching others hit big while they didn’t. They weren’t driven by the fear of being hammered by the competition.”
And the truth is that GREAT individuals, the successful ones are not driven by fear! Just like great businesses they focus on themselves … their only competition is themselves.
And this is the ultimate albeit accidental lesson I got from the book …
That is that to be successful, we have to see ourselves not as individuals but as businesses. And as business we have to have a life mission statement, we need to have our core values defined, financial targets defined and invest our time in only things that help grow our businesses while finding time to give back to the community.
When we start seeing ourselves as business we begin to elevate our perception of ourselves beyond the realm of individualism and that is where the real magic happens! Are you open for business?
